Hello, friends! Welcome back and today, I have a special treat for all of you. The Sunnyville Stories Super Special #2 has been funded through Kickstarter. (You can still pledge to the Kickstarter too.) I have also designed the cover and how that came to be was quite a process. I’ll share today how we got started on making the cover to the second Super Special!
First, I needed an idea. I had something I had wanted to use for awhile. It was the album cover to Ringo Star’s 1974 album “Goodnight, Vienna”.
In case you didn’t figure it out, that album cover references the 1951 science fiction movie “The Day The Earth Stood Still”. Moving on, I started working out drawings of what the cover would look like. The basic idea was I’d have Rusty dressed in a spacesuit and the giant robot Gort next to him.
I swear that it took many tries to get Gort right.
This sketch was the final design I decided to go with. It matched what was in my head. Some out there think I’m much too stupid or have very bad technical ability – that is NOT true. I put a lot of thought into my work, be it a drawing, a comics page or a more complex illustration. Since this cover is for a Kickstarter comic, I wanted to make sure it was my best effort.
I then selected a piece of 11 x 15 inch watercolor paper and prepared to get drawing…but that will be for next time.
