Sunnyville Number 16 Report: Jan. 13, 2018

Welcome back, everyone.  First, if you haven’t already, go pledge to the Sunnyville Volume 4 Kickstarter and spread the word.

Moving on, work is progressing on Sunnyville Stories #16.  These next few pages have been quite a challenge for me.

Sunnyville #16 pages await further inking

These pages are going to be some of the hardest I have ever drawn – not in terms of drawing skill required but because it is so emotional.  These panels deal with the adults having to explain to small children about death and dying.  You can see that panel above has Bethany Talbot asking about death.

I have no idea how adults talk to children about death.

In the above photo, I am awaiting to ink the start of the funeral of Mr. Jakes.  After this scene, there remains the graves of Mr. Jakes and his wife to draw…this comic is shaping up to be more than I expected.

Just so that we’re clear, the basic idea and plot for this story were conceived way back in 2009 when I was planning the series.  I just thought of it as another story then.

But as time went on, I drew the characters in their universe and started to feel something different.  I felt that these characters had practically come to life, that they were just as real as me and you and they continue to exist.  The fact that I “killed” off one of my characters grew disturbing to me.  I had this feeling when I wrote the script and started sketching out the basic thumbnails.

I had created something else that I had originally intended.  I don’t know what else to say.

That’s it for now.  Stay tuned for more updates, more photos and more Kickstarter news.
