I have a brief announcement to make, readers. Sunnyville Stories is going to be produced and published here on by Different Mousetrap Press – a publishing company under my ownership.
Yes, I’ve done it. In the morning hours of Monday, January 6, 2013, I created articles of organization to form a limited liability company and have mailed them to state government offices in Raleigh, North Carolina. Within a few more days, I will be an LLC within the state of North Carolina.
Different Mousetrap Press LLC will be the publisher and market of my work, Sunnyville Stories and other properties that I create – such as my current project, Von Herling Vampire Hunter.
Why the LLC? This form allows me the best of both worlds. I get the ease of pass-through taxation like a sole proprietorship with the limited liability protection of a corporation, yet with none of the strict formalities of the corporation.
The name of my company was an accident. There’s a famous proverb that goes “build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door”. When it came to my comics, I wanted to offer something other than a standard superhero tale. So I said to myself that my goal was not to offer a better mousetrap, but a different mousetrap. I like that phrase so much that I decided to keep it.
