I am hard at work on Sunnyville #17. I’ll share my progress on that tomorrow but I did want to share two test comics I did with Dominic and Claire, the characters who will be appearing in my planned Sunnyville spin-off (and their own Kickstarter in June).
The Dominic & Claire Comedy Show will be a print comic just like Sunnyville Stories. However, I plan to create short one and two page comics with a short joke like what you saw above. I’ve dubbed these “short takes”.
I took the term from the programming from cable television channel HBO. Back in the 1980s, I did pick up this channel and got treated to a variety of amazing programming. In between programs, HBO would run something they called HBO Short Takes; these were filler segments consisting of short films, both animated and live-action. I liked that term and decided to use that. These short takes will be shown both here on the blog and on my DeviantArt gallery.
Basically, these are short jokes with the punchline, usually delivered by Dominic, and set up by Claire or another character. This is basically the entire premise of the Dominic & Claire pairing. Dominic is the wise guy and Claire is the straight man; Claire is there to set up Dominic to say something funny. Her laughing is the usual reaction to what Dominic says.
Hey, the wise guy and straight man isn’t original but it works!
