Finding Fans for 2019

This is a personal entry.  As 2018 draws to a close and we approach 2019, I feel conflicted inside.  What I feel is a paradox.

I feel that success is so close and yet at the same time it is so far away from me.

How to proceed?  My mind boggles.  I felt it was time for a fresh perspective so I sorted through my books until I found what I was looking for – the Cerebus Guide to Self-Publishing by Dave Sim from Aardvark-Vanaheim.  As you all know, Dave Sim is the creator of Cerebus the Aardvark which he drew, wrote and published to the very end – all 300 issues.

I read through the book again, reading Sim’s experiences at conventions, keeping egos in check, dealing with Diamond distribution and more.  I don’t agree with everything Sim says (he’s pretty critical of computers) but the parts about selling comics to individuals and retailers…something clicked.  I got what he was saying.

Besides keeping my ego in check, I keep forgetting that it’s very important to cultivate fans.  While that was always a goal of mine, that has escaped for me the moment.

Reading the book made me curious more about Diamond.  I have started doing research as I have started thinking about putting Dominic & Claire comics out there in the direct market.  But that’s another blog post.

I have gotten back on track now.  Tomorrow, I’ll share some news on Dominic & Claire.
