Valleycon 2016 Approaches!

Readers, I apologize for not updating sooner.  With the 24 hour comics challenge over and other challenges on the horizon, I also need to get ready for Valleycon.

I will be selling comics at this convention and will also have a Square reader to use if anyone wants to buy Sunnyville books with their credit cards.

As a reminder, I will be offering special deals available at this convention; anyone wanting copies of Sunnyville volumes 1, 2 and 3 or Von Herling can get them for cheaper than at a retailer or Amazon!

Valleycon will be Friday, October 14 through Sunday, October 16 at the Baymont Inn & Suites located on 3333 13th Avenue South in Fargo, North Dakota; it’s right off Interstate 29.  I  will be offering live coverage of the event consisting of tweets, photos and all kinds of fun stuff.

Stay tuned to the blog, Twitter and Facebook for more news!

Sign up for the Sunnyville Stories mailing list if you haven’t yet.  Stop over to DriveThru Comics for digital copies of Sunnyville Stories.  Copies of Sunnyville Stories Volume 1 are still for sale on Amazon, both in print and Kindle formats!  While you’re there, be sure to pick up Sunnyville Stories Volume 2 and (if you love Gothic horror)Von Herling, Vampire Hunter!  And now available is the latest installment of the saga, Sunnyville Stories Volume 3.  Get them today!

Copies of all the above titles are available to the library trade via Brodart Company and to retailers from Ingram and Baker & Taylor (via BCH Distribution).  Copies are also available direct from the publisher.  For ordering information, contact maxwestart(at)gmail(dot)com or write to:

Different Mousetrap Press LLC, 1100 19th Avenue N, #108, Unit J, Fargo ND 58102-2269 USA

Report on 24 Hour Comic Day 2016

October 1st, 2016 has come and gone; that was 24 Hour Comics Day.  I undertook the 24 Hour Comic Challenge again as I reported yesterday.  And all of you are probably wondering what happened.

I did it!  For the second time, I created a 24 page comic within 24 hours.  I finished the final page and signed at approximately 10:44 AM Central time this morning on Sunday, October 2nd.

Finishing 24 hour comics

I snapped this photo after signing the page with my watch as proof of the time – that’s atomic timekeeping on my Casio so it’s dead accurate.  Oh, yes…I have some other photos of work as I drew it.   Continue reading

24 Hour Comics Day 2016

Today, October 1, is 24 Hour Comic Day.  I will be undertaking the challenge yet again.  In a short time from now, from 12:00pm Central time today through 12:00pm Central time tomorrow on Sunday, October 2, I will produce a 24 page comic in 24 hours.

I am prepared for this.  I have all the materials I need and I have a clear idea.

Tune into my Twitter and the Sunnyville Stories Facebook page for live updates of my progress.  I’ll have a full report at the end of the 24 hour period.

Wish me luck.

Make Mine Indie And 24 Hour Comic Day

I’ve got a few announcements to make right now.  First, I’d like to talk about a digital publication called Make Mine Indie.

Published by Alterna Comics, Make Mine Indie is a publication that lists the comics and graphic novels published by various small presses, information about them and where they can be purchased.  Sunnyville Stories Volumes 1, 2 and 3 are listed in the most recent edition (fall 2016) as is Von Herling, Vampire Hunter.  The fall 2016 issue of Make Mine Indie is now available and for free too so go download it.  It’s available in both PDF and CBZ format, though at a whopping 3.24 MB so it may take some to download depending on your connection speed and equipment.  It’s available too on Comixology.   Continue reading

Anime Fargo 2016 Report

I attended Anime Fargo 2016 yesterday.  The point of this convention was to network and meet others.  As I said before, I lost the raffle for the artist alley so I wasn’t able to sell here.  From the artists I talked to (more on that in a moment), the competition for getting into this artist alley was quite fierce.

There was much to see as there was no shortage of vendors selling anime, manga, video games and related merchandise.   Continue reading

The Basics of Copyright

Today, I will talk to you about a relevant subject when it comes to comics or, in fact, any intellectual property (literature, music, film, and so on).  It’s copyright.  Copyright itself is a vast subject and going over it in detail would take up a whole blog in and of itself.  However, I can try to go over the bare basics of the topic and clue you in on other resources you can use to investigate copyright.  As a disclaimer, this blog post is NOT meant as a substitute for legal advice of any sort.  Anyone wanting to know more about copyright (such as registration) should consult your local laws and possibly a lawyer.  This information is more about copyright in the United States of America.  If you reside in Canada, Mexico, Europe, Japan and so forth, you’ll have to check copyright laws there for details and procedures.  Anyway, let’s get this show on the road.   Continue reading
