1,000 True Fans

In my research in marketing and crowdfunding, I came across an article that I’ve heard about in the past.

Written by Kevin Kelly, this is an article titled “1,000 True Fans”.  You can read the article in its entirety, but I think he makes a great point.

Some of us…okay, a lot of us out there aim to make a huge blockbuster hit.  We want to create the next Star Wars, the next Mickey Mouse, and so on.   Continue reading

Why Other Kickstarters Succeed

I’ve expressed that I want to do another Kickstarter drive to fund Sunnyville comics.  But I have no intention of doing one until I meet certain conditions.  I need to understand why the first Kickstarter failed.  I also need to learn more from others about crowdfunding.

But it’s not enough to understand why I failed.

It’s not enough to learn everything I can.

Some out there have succeeded and some have had really phenomenal success.  I need to study them, talk to the organizers and understand why they made their goals!  Enter Jason Brubaker.   Continue reading

The Importance of Life Drawing

My sabbatical hasn’t officially started yet, but I’m not waiting to get my skills up to par.  I haven’t been to life drawing in quite some time, so I started with that as practice.  Luckily for me, the Plains Art Museum right here in town holds life drawing sessions in their studio.  At time of this writing, they only hold life drawing once a month but that’s still good for practice.  Anyway, my traditional tools for life drawing have usually been pencils and graphite sticks.   Continue reading

Announcing the Sunnyville Annual!

I’ve got another announcement to make.  Sometime in the spring of this year (most likely June), I will be releasing the very first Sunnyville Stories Annual!

This annual will be released in both electronic format and in print format.  The Sunnyville Annual 2016 will contain some older comics I did with the Sunnyville gang from 2009 and 2010.  It will also have extra material, including a new original story introducing a new character.

At this time, this is the only annual I plan to do.  But if enough positive feedback comes back, I may do more of these.  The 2016 Sunnyville annual may also be reprinted in Sunnyville Stories Volume 4 or Volume 5.

I will have more news on the annual and its content as the planned June release draws near.  Stay tuned for more news as it develops!

Indyfest Magazine

I have a big announcement to make.  Sometime ago, I was interviewed in Self-Publisher Magazine; that magazine was renamed Indyfest Magazine.  It is a PDF format magazine free for download that covers independent comics.

What?  Some of you may react with indifference.  You’re wondering why I’m telling you this or what this had to do with Sunnyville Stories.

Sunnyville Stories and I will be the COVER STORY for the planned Indyfest issue that is scheduled for release in June of this year!

In addition to an article, there’ll be some artwork and I will be contributing cover art!

I’ll have more news on that as the time comes.  I’ll keep you posted.

Type 101 for Illustrators

I follow the Muddy Colors blog, a cool blog done by top commercial artists like Donato Giancola, Dan dos Santos and Jesper Ejsing.  Anyway, they recently put up this cool blog post about using type in your work.  While the science of typography is more extensive and can’t be covered in a single blog post, that is a good reference still.

I do like commenting on these posts BTW to talk shop and also share my own input.  I even clued them in on some of my own favorite texts talking about type!

Interview and Cerebus Sketches

I have various bits of news to share today.

First, one of my goals for 2016 was to get at least five interviews and already I have three of them!

First there was Root Beer Party.

Second came Self Publisher’s Showcase.

Third came Indie Book Butler!

That’s not bad…but there’s so much more to do.  While the Internet is a handy source of material for landing interviews, I want to get coverage in at least one form of print media.  That’s why I’m talking to trade journals covering comics and other forms of entertainment; I’m also open to any fanzines wanting to interview me or ask me about my work.  If you represent such a publication or even a media outlet (television or radio), please contact me.   Continue reading
