Episode 10 Page 1 Pencils

As I promised, I’ll share some of the rough pencils that I’ve been working on for Sunnyville Stories episode 10 “Listen to the Music”. So shall we get this show on the road?

Our story begins in the vast forests surrounding Sunnyville. What you’re seeing here is fifty percent reference and fifty percent organic. In other words, what’s “organic” is what comes from my memory. If you see the tree on the far left, you’ll see it’s quite bumpy. That tree came from an actual photo of one in my reference files. It’s important to remember that not all trees are straight. Many have bumps, nobs, and unusual shapes. That’s why I encourage everyone to gather photo reference or even go out into nature to make some sketches of real trees. Continue reading

Aiming Higher for Sunnyville

I’ve been very busy lately. Besides other things, I’ve had to attend to various business related issues with Different Mousetrap Press. A lot of them are official business matters such as taxes, but I’ve also had to make some tough decisions.

As some of you know, I’ve done an original graphic novel of Gothic horror Von Herling, Vampire Hunter (ISBN 9780989069618). I had initially planned a sequel and maybe even a few more. However, due to time constraints and an unpredictable schedule, I’m afraid that I have to cancel the planned sequel I was developing. This shorter sequel Von Herling Faces Death won’t see the light of day. Will I ever return to the story of Von Herling? I don’t know.

The most important thing is that I need to concentrate on Sunnyville Stories, which is my main concern. Continue reading

Lessons Learned From Kickstarter

Looking back on the failed Kickstarter campaign, I learned a lot of lessons from it. For my own good and for the good of anyone else out there interested in crowdfunding, I’ll share what I’ve learned with all of you.

First and foremost, you need to understand that Kickstarter (and any other crowdfunding site) is NOT some magical land with free money for the taking. If you believe otherwise, then don’t waste your time.

The biggest problem I had with my own campaign was not enough promotion and a lack of planning. The strongest piece of advice I can give you is not to go into a Kickstarter campaign cold. You really need to do your homework ahead of time. Continue reading

Episode 10 and other notes

I have a few notes of interest today. First, I came across this interesting blog post about Neil Gaiman’s Eight Rules of Writing. It’s definitely worth reading. Rule number three really caught my eye:

3. Finish what you’re writing. Whatever you have to do to finish it, finish it.

Episode 10 Script Excerpt

Good day, friends. It’s fourteen days until the release of Sunnyville Stories Volume 2. On March 1, 2014, the book officially hits the streets!

At present, I’m working on Sunnyville Stories episode 10. I’m trying to work out the layouts for the pages and it isn’t easy. (I did talk about the importance of thumbnails and layouts before.) I also have been in contact with Steven Martin; he’ll be doing a guest cover for this comic just as he did for Sunnyville #5. I’ll have more information in the future about the story itself and the new characters in it.

But today, I thought I’d share a script excerpt. This isn’t from the final script; it was an early draft that went out to a handful of people for review. Enjoy! Continue reading

Cerebus Heads For Sunnyville

I have some big news, everybody. Sometime ago, I sent a letter to Dave Sim up in Kitchener, Ontario. I wanted to ask for permission to use his famous creation, Cerebus the Aardvark, in Sunnyville Stories episode 10.

This morning, I went to mail some letters and swung by my post office box at the Murrow Boulevard post office here in Greensboro. When I opened up my box, I found a mailer inside and the address was from Kitchener! Yes, Dave Sim had actually written back to me! Continue reading

Review: The Non-Designer’s Design Book

Today, I’m doing a book review. It’s been ages since I’ve done one and I have a title here that may be of interest to self-publishers like us. The book is The Non-Designer’s Design Book by Robin P. Williams. Just a warning before we go forward – the edition of the book I’m reviewing is an early edition. A second edition has since been put out with a few changes.

The Non-Designer’s Design Book is exactly what it says on the tin. The book’s subtitle is “Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice.” If you are someone who doesn’t have the slightest clue about graphic design, then this is the book for you.

The text itself explains the basic principles of design. Each one is explained by itself (there are four total) and then how it is used in practical applications. The four principles are then shown when utilized together.

The other aspect of design the book talks about is typography. It explains the different categories of typefaces and how they should be properly used. As before, practical applications and exercises are demonstrated on how to use said typefaces.

The book is definitely informative. It’s meant for the person who has no clue how to do graphic design. It’s intended for the secretary who has to do the company newsletter, the churchgoer asked to design the church bulletin, the businessman who needs to work up flyers, and so on. The only downside of the book is that it is NOT a replacement for a degree in graphic design. Don’t think that you can strike out on your own as a graphic design expert just by reading this book.

Anyway, this blog is about comics. A lot of you are wondering what exactly does a book on graphic design have to do with making comics. If you are a do-it-yourself type like me, it’s tricky to layout textual information for your comics, zines, and books. This manual can help you do all that with the knowledge inside. As I do not have experience with graphic design, I’ve studied it and used it in making promotional flyers, business cards, ads, and pages for my trade paperbacks.

Overall, the Non-Designer’s Design Book is a good purchase for anyone wanting to do their own books and doesn’t have the knowledge of design for doing so.

Episode 9 Inking Continues

Just to let you know, loyal readers, work is continuing on the inks for Sunnyville Stories episode 9. It’s slow-going as I have other issues to deal with (taxes and paperwork related to Kickstarter), but the work will be finished soon enough.

At this time, I’m inking the scenes where Goro starts to become uneasy with his newly arrived nephew, Goemon, and his flashy cooking skills. Continue reading
